Reuters – In a first, India gifts active warship to Vietnam

  • An active duty missile corvette of the Indian Navy is on its way to Vietnam as a gift, the first warship given by India to any country.
  • India and Vietnam have strengthened their ties in recent years, with a special focus on defence, as both countries are concerned over an increasingly assertive China.
  • India has given smaller boats and military equipment to countries like Maldives and Mauritius in the past and a submarine to Myanmar.
  • But the corvette for Vietnam is the first time India has given a warship to a Chinese neighbour with a coast on the South China Sea, where several countries have overlapping territorial claims.
  • The gift was announced when Vietnam’s Defence Minister Gen Phan Van Giang visited India earlier this month. The warship was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1991 and has been designed and produced within the country

Reuters – Putin and Modi discuss Ukraine, armed mutiny in phone call

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation around Ukraine and how Moscow had resolved an armed mercenary mutiny in a telephone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, the Kremlin and New Delhi said.
  • Moscow said that Modi had expressed support for what the Kremlin called the Russian leadership’s decisive actions in handling the mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group last Saturday.
  • The Indian government said Putin, who will also join Modi on Tuesday for a virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, informed the prime minister about the recent developments in Russia during their conversation.
  • The call comes after the United States and India declared themselves “among the closest partners in the world” last week during a state visit to Washington by Modi.
  • India has not condemned its old ally Russia over the invasion of Ukraine and have urged both sides to resolve their differences through diplomacy. Modi told Putin last year that “today’s era is not an era of war”.
  • “While discussing the situation in Ukraine, PM (Modi) reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy,” New Delhi said in a statement.

Reuters – Indian high court dismisses Twitter’s plea against government; slaps 5 million-rupee fine, lawyer says

  • India’s Karnataka High Court on Friday dismissed Twitter’s plea challenging the federal government’s orders to block tweets and accounts and imposed a fine of 5 million rupees ($60,943.65), a lawyer for Twitter told Reuters.
  • The court on Friday ruled that Twitter was served notices, to which it did not comply, India’s Deputy Minister for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in a tweet.
  • The U.S.-based firm had last year asked the court to overturn some government orders to remove content from the social media platform.
  • Last year, in a filing with the top court in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Twitter had argued that some removal orders fell short of the procedural requirements of India’s IT act, Reuters had reported.
  • The country’s IT act allows the government to block public access to content in the interest of national security, among other reasons.

BBC – Madras high court: A new India verdict recognises value of women’s work

  • An Indian court’s recent verdict that significantly expands the rights of homemakers over their husband’s property has been hailed as a positive sign by women’s rights advocates.
  • On 21 June, the Madras high court – in the southern state of Tamil Nadu – passed a verdict in a domestic dispute case that allowed a housewife equal share in her husband’s property. In its verdict, the court said that the wife had contributed equally towards acquiring family assets by doing domestic chores.
  • It said that the “contribution made by either the husband by earning or the wife by serving and looking after the family and children” would mean that “both are entitled equally to whatever they earned by their joint effort”. It did not matter in whose name the property was bought – the spouse who looked and cared after the family would be entitled to an equal share in them.
  • The wife works for 24 hours in various roles, including that of a chef, a “home doctor” and a “home economist”, the court said. In the absence of the homemaker’s duties, the husband would have to pay for the services these roles provided.
  • “By performing these skills, a wife makes the home a comfortable environment and her contribution towards the family, and certainly it is not a valueless job, but it is a job doing for 24 hours without holidays, which cannot be less equated with that of the job of an earning husband who works only for 8 hours,” the court noted.
