BBC – Elon Musk to visit India for meeting with PM Modi
- Elon Musk has announced on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that he will visit India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi without giving a date.
- The Tesla boss is expected to announce major investment plans in the country soon.
- In 2021, the Tesla boss said that India’s high import duties had prevented the firm from launching its cars in the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
- A senior Indian government official told the BBC that the meeting is scheduled for the last week of April and will take place at Mr Modi’s official residence in New Delhi.
- Mr Musk’s visit comes just as the country begins voting in marathon, six-week-long elections on 19 April. Mr Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to win a third term in power.

Reuters – Top Indian court blasts drugs regulator for not acting against yoga guru’s medical firm
- India’s top court admonished the head of a state drugs regulator for failing to take action against a popular yoga guru’s firm which claimed its traditional ayurvedic medicines can cure chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma.
- The Supreme Court said on Wednesday the state drugs department had “tried to pass on the buck” despite being informed in 2018 of advertisements issued by Divya Pharmacy, a unit of yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s hugely popular firm Patanjali Ayurved.
- Ramdev, dressed in a saffron-coloured robe, attended the hearing of contempt case against Patanjali for defying court directives to stop publishing the ads.
- Mithilesh Kumar, the head of Uttarakhand state drugs regulator, also attended the session. With folded hands, he pleaded with the judges to give him more time to take action against the company, which the judges refused.
- “Why should we not come down on your officers like a ton of bricks?” Justice Hima Kohli asked the Uttarakhand state counsel.
- The two-judge bench said the drugs authority remained in “deep slumber” on the issue and had failed to act after issuing a warning to the firm over the advertisements.
- The bench also refused to accept a second apology by Ramdev and Patanjali co-founder Acharya Balkrishna for defying the court’s order. It set April 16 as the next date of hearing.

Gulf news – India’s Prime Minister Modi woos south in bid for pan-India ride to power
- Few doubt Narendra Modi will win re-election in India’s marathon polls starting this month — the question is how far the prime minister will succeed in wooing the south.
- After a decade in power, Modi hopes to significantly increase his Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) 55 per cent parliamentary majority — and to do that requires winning in southern states.
- Modi’s BJP won 303 of 543 seats in the lower house of parliament in 2019, but mainly from the Hindi-speaking north.
- Holding repeated rallies across the south, Modi has sought to win new voters, offering his “topmost respect” to the south’s Tamil culture and language, including wearing the region’s traditional white wrap, waving from open-topped convoys in flower-strewn parades.
- Modi has also launched a social media handle in Tamil, to win over those who see the BJP dominated by northern Hindi speakers.

Arab News – BBC to split India news operations
- The BBC in India is set to divide its news operations into two entities to comply with the country’s foreign investment regulations, the broadcaster announced on Wednesday.
- Effective immediately, the restructuring will involve the establishment of a new Indian-owned subsidiary named the Collective Newsroom, through which the network will continue its content production in India.
- BBC, known for its six regional channels broadcasting in various Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, and Punjabi, intends to hold a 26 percent stake in Collective Newsroom, allowing it to maintain significant independence from the parent broadcaster.
- This development follows stringent regulations implemented by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, mandating limited foreign ownership in national media entities.
- The move comes a year after BBC India’s offices were searched by authorities for the alleged violation of India’s stringent foreign investment regulations, accusing it of not fully disclosing profits.
- Collective Newsroom, founded by four BBC staffers, will absorb the remaining former BBC employees. The new company will also be able to make content for other news providers across India and globally.
- Rupa Jha, chief executive of Collective Newsroom, said the new company has “a clear, ambitious mission to create the most credible, creative and courageous journalism.”

Are you a UAE-based Non-resident Indian (NRI) looking to invest in a health insurance plan back home? If you are, you may have realised that it isn’t easy to decide what type of plan brings you the most tax-related savings.
“As an NRI, there are taxation norms you need to consider when buying health insurance in India. This is why many NRIs who migrate abroad often face hiccups on this before they return to India,” said Brijesh Meti, a UAE-based consultant who decodes tax norms for residents in India and abroad.
“It doesn’t matter if you are buying an insurance plan for yourself or for your parents, by purchasing health insurance in India, you automatically become eligible for tax deductions according to the prevailing Income Tax regulations.”
