 Reuters – India to send high level delegation to Ukraine summit, Zelenskiy says

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said India would send a “high-level” delegation to an international summit in Switzerland on Ukraine this weekend after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Italy on Friday.
  • The leaders, who met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit, discussed trade, expanding ties and preparations for the summit, which Ukraine hopes will be attended by around 100 countries and organisations.

Reuters – Global airlines bet on India travel boom

  • Global airlines are launching new flights and expanding schedules in India, betting the South Asian giant will become one of the hottest travel markets over the next decade, airline officials and analysts say.
  • India, among the fastest-growing major aviation markets, took centre stage at the industry’s largest gathering of global airline CEOs and aircraft leasing companies in Dubai last week, with domestic and international air travel surging.
  • The domestic air travel market in India is expected to double to 300 million passengers from a record 152 million in 2023, according to government data.
  • International traffic is set to grow faster, reaching 160 million passengers by 2030 from 64 million last year, estimates from aviation research group CAPA India show.
  • To tap that growth, Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS), opens new tab is evaluating flights between its southern beach town of Antalya and India, chairman Ahmet Bolat said at The International Air Transport Association (IATA) summit.

BBC – India brings back bodies of 45 workers from Kuwait

  • An Indian Air Force flight has brought back the bodies of 45 workers who were killed in a fire in Kuwait.
  • The fire broke out on Wednesday at a residential building in Mangaf city where 176 Indian workers lived.Kuwaiti authorities said 50 people were killed in the fire, including 45 from India and three from the Philippines. Two bodies are yet to be identified.
  • Dozens of workers, most of them Indian, have also been injured in the fire.Two-thirds of the Kuwaiti population is made up of foreign workers and the country is highly dependent on migrant labour, especially in the construction and domestic sectors.
  • Human rights groups have regularly raised concerns over their living conditions.

BBC – The Ice Man of Ladakh building artificial glaciers in the Himalayas

  • In Ladakh, which has a cold and arid climate and minimal annual rainfall of about 86.8mm (3.4in), 80% of the region’s farmers depend on the glaciers to irrigate their crops. Over the past 30 years, there has been a significant decrease in snowfall, leading to reduced snow cover and resulting in retreating glaciers, insufficient stream water and severe water shortages in Himalayan villages.
  • one local engineer is combatting this glacier crisis using an innovative technique.
  • Referred to as the “Ice Man of Ladakh”, Chewang Norphel has successfully constructed an artificial glacier in Nang, a village near to Thiksey.

Reuters – India’s Rajasthan starts recalling some batches of MDH, Everest spices

  • India’s western state of Rajasthan has started recalling some batches of popular MDH and Everest spices, which were found to be unsafe for consumption, a top official said, the latest in growing domestic and global scrutiny of the brands.
  • Rajasthan told the federal government in a letter it found a batch of Everest’s cumin powder and a batch each of two MDH spice blends unsafe after tests, Reuters reported on Thursday.

Associated Press – Oxford University to return bronze sculpture of Hindu saint to India

  • Oxford University has agreed to return a 500-year-old bronze sculpture of a Hindu poet and saint to India, the university’s Ashmolean Museum said.
  • The Indian High Commission in the U.K. made a claim four years ago for the bronze figure of Tirumankai Alvar that was allegedly looted from a temple.
  • Vijay Kumar, co-founder of India Pride Project, which seeks to reclaim stolen religious artifacts, said worshippers have something to cheer.
  • The planned repatriation comes amid a push by foreign governments, including Nigeria, Egypt and Greece, as well as Indigenous peoples from North America to Australia, seeking to reclaim precious antiquities looted or acquired by questionable means during the heyday of the British Empire.

  • India’s new aviation minister said on Tuesday he wanted to make air travel more accessible by tackling the issue of rising fares, as the sector sees rapid growth and carriers place record new plane orders.
  • India is the world’s fastest growing aviation market but domestic carriers have to contend with global supply chain disruptions that delay plane deliveries, contributing to higher air fares, executives say.
  • An Indian parliamentary panel proposed in February that the government should frame guidelines to control sudden surges in airfares, adding that “a route-specific fare ceiling can be examined”.
  • The airlines say fares are driven by supply and demand.

Associated Press – India’s Modi prepares for record 3rd term as nations congratulate his government on election victory

The United States, Russia, China, and other nations sent their congratulations Wednesday as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government began preparations for his swearing-in for a record third term following the world’s largest democratic election.

Modi’s Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party met with allies who unanimously elected Modi as the National Democratic Alliance leader. Modi is likely to be sworn in as the prime minister on Saturday, local media said.

Congratulatory messages to Modi from leaders of regional countries including Nepal and Bhutan were the first to arrive, while the White House commended India for its “vibrant democratic process.”

U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Modi to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election, Biden also commended the people of India for participating in the largest democratic exercise in human history.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Modi on Wednesday and “warmly congratulated” him. Putin and Modi “expressed satisfaction with the current level of the specially privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India, which will continue to expand in all directions,” said a readout by the Kremlin.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Wednesday extended congratulations to the BJP.

“A sound and stable India-China relationship is in the interest of both countries and conducive to the peace and development of this region and beyond,” she said, adding that China is ready to work with India in the fundamental interest of the two countries.

Tensions remain high between India and China, with tens of thousands of soldiers massed on their disputed border since 2020. A clash left 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers dead.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he looked forward to seeing India attend a peace summit to be hosted by Switzerland.“Everyone in the world recognizes the significance and weight of India’s role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations,” he said.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said he looked forward to expanding collaboration in trade, technology and other sectors to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
